The human Transthyretin (TTR) ELISA kit is suitable for the quantitative determination of human TTR in different sample types, including serum, plasma, and tissue homogenates. This assay employs the competitive inbition reaction and enzyme-substrate chromogenic reaction to quantify antigen levels in the sample. The amount of synthesized colored products is positively related to the analyte of interest in the sample.
TTR is a tetrameric transport protein that is synthesized in the liver, choroid plexus, and retinal pigment epithelium and then secreted into the bloodstream, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and eye, respectively. It is responsible for the transport of the thyroid hormone thyroxine and the RBP bound to retinol (vitamin A). TTR is the key protein in familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP), a systemic amyloidosis characterized by the deposition of amyloid derived from mutated TTR. It has recently discovered novel functions of TTR, including neuronal health preservation of both central and peripheral nervous systems, determination of cellular fate, and regulation of proliferation and metabolism.
