The product CSB-E11848h is a sandwich ELISA kit developed to measure levels of human ADAM metallopeptidase with thrombospondin type 1 motif4 (ADAMTS4) in serum, plasma, or tissue homogenates. The enzyme-substrate chromogenic reaction is also used to amplify the signal and quantify the levels of the analyte through the intensity of the colored product. The color intensity positively correlates with the amount of ADAMTS4 bound in the initial step.

ADAMTS4, also known as aggrecanase-1, is expressed prominently in endocrine organs, lungs, and the brain. As a secreted proteinase, ADAMTS4 is involved in inflammation and matrix degradation. It mainly functions to degrade proteoglycans expressed physiologically in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) of blood vessels and the developing heart. Studies have shown that ADAMTS4 is a major aggrecanase in osteoarthritis (OA) synovium and synergistically up-regulated by IL-1α, TNF-α, and TGF-β in OA synovial fibroblasts. It is believed to play a key role in the degradation of cartilage proteoglycan (aggrecan) in OA and rheumatoid arthritis.
